Biver: Heritage, Quality and Community

Everyone discovers Biver because of Jean-Claude Biver’s legacy in the watch industry.

You stay because of Pierre Biver, Nolan, Francois, and the other on this incredible team. Pierre is a sponge who absorbed his father’s knowledge and wisdom quietly, surprising him with incredible maturity and good taste, which is rare and hard to teach. Pierre is more of an old soul than his father.
With the new Biver AB, the baton has passed from the GOAT leader, but one thing has not changed: there are no personal-professional boundaries when you are pursuing a passion, as obsession and pleasure do not rest on weekends or vacations.

The collectors of Biver have been rewarded beyond caring for an object: we get to spend time with the Biver family, be it in New York or Switzerland, and learn priceless principles for a happy life: eternity thinking, love, and no retiring from your mission. All of them are transmitted with positive and infinite energy by JCB via the warmth of a leader you could spend days and days talking to about everything and anything. He is the wise man who anchors you on what matters, distilling noise and signal.

You exit the precious interactions with calm mind yet energized to make a difference in life, while loving your friends and family dearly and clearly feeling you are part of their family.
The Biver collectors could not be more diverse, both in terms of walks of life and personality. And there lies its strength: we would never have been united if it weren’t for Biver watches. My favorite story is how one of these collectors, a great doctor, stepped up to help me surprise my wife in a moment that will live in my memory forever.
By now you must be confused: isn’t this an article about watches? Of course it is, but understanding what the watches represent is the surprising and rewarding part.

There are few watches in the world with the quality level of a Biver. I still remember when I got to see my first Biver under a loop: the smile is unstoppable; akin to holding a Rexhep, Simon Brette, Ferdinand Berthoud, Grubel Forsey, Kari, or Krayon.
No watch is truly perfect. All you get is the pursuit of perfection, and when that is the goal, you cannot make many watches. Stone dials cannot be made unless the stones are perfect, and there are not that many perfect stones out there. Movement decoration takes time, and finding people who can finish watches to the quality of a Biver is truly hard to find. The limitations create natural scarcity, not manipulated scarcity.
The technically beautiful watches would not be possible without Francois Perez, Biver’s technical director. He is the architect turning vision into reality. You can learn more about this young Parisian talent in a Hodinkee article published on January 30, 2025. The Biver watches first came to market with the Carillon Turbillon timepieces. The bar was set high. The sound is perfection, tested for consistency with science. The watches were a statement, yet few could start their journey with these pieces.

The Automatiques is what created a Biver community. The watches were simple at first sight yet intricate and perfect under the loop. The cases made by Leonis Tafaj have perfect proportions and lugs. Clearly inspired by the best watches ever made in history by the likes of Patek, but with a modern touch. The stone dials are all stunning: a JCB idea which marked the series. But few people know about the “PB” dials: the brushed gold or platinum dials which have a completely different feel to them. A more vintage vibe. As I said before, the Biver collectors are very diverse: the watches all carry the same design language, but the dials allow for matches made in Heaven with the personality of the collectors. There is something different for each taste.

The “PB” dials almost did not come to exist if it weren’t for Pierre’s intuition, rewarded when an experienced retailer said, “Do you have any dials other than stone?” As Pierre pulled them out of the bag, his father realized his son was ready to carry on the family legacy. The enthusiasm of the retailers surprised JCB and freed Pierre to create and lead. JCB now has peace of mind as role shifts to mentor.

Of all the crazy pieces of Biver, one in particular is worth your attention: the Catharsis. It does not have hands for hours or minutes; you can only ask for the time in the form of sound. The dial itself is a piece of art. I finally got to see and feel it in person; the piece belongs in a museum. And the collector, now caretaker of the watch, knows art quite well – very appropriate. The next step is also interesting and telling of Biver: as a reward to the collector, Biver wanted to create a piece unique. The collector had something peculiar and unique in mind. At first, Biver was worried that it would be too crazy. But the Automatique that followed came out just brilliantly unique and perfect. Biver was rewarded by trusting the collector, and the collector has a companion to the Catharsis. Both, in my opinion, belong in a museum.
And now comes the Biver AB. A steel manual watch that strives to continue the legacy of Biver, but is uniquely Pierre. Its vintage vibe dial confirms it. The quality is quiet: the movement is white gold, not yellow gold because anything perfect must match the case tone. The dial is complex and has a depth you can only appreciate in person. The bracelet is unbelievable and comfortable. No wonder this watch is already a huge success.

But most importantly, the Biver AB marks a historical moment for the Biver legacy: a transition to Pierre and Nolan. They have 60 years ahead of them; a wonderfully long time to do things slowly and pursue them with passion and perfection.
